Some of the most dangerous and extreme Islamic groups are:

Salafi – Sometimes referred to as “Wahabi,” Salafi is a group whose roots are in Saudi Arabia and is financed by the oil industry[1]. On their website, National Interests magazine states that the Treasury Department “assesses ISIL’s crude oil revenue at a value of $1 million per day[2].” Salafi is the parent organization of both Al Qaeda and ISIS (AKA ‘ISIL’ [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant], ‘Islamic State,’ or ‘Daesh’). It accounts for 1% of the Muslim population and is known for being the most threatening and dangerous of terrorist groups[3]. The CIA has estimated that ISIL alone has about 31,000 fighters[4]. One of the reasons this group is most feared is because of its complete intolerance of, and willingness to decimate any person or group who resists their beliefs. In addition, they are known for carrying out their attacks in extremely brutal and heinous ways[5].

Taliban – Originating with the Sunni Deobandi perspective, the Taliban is an Afghan Pashtun group[6]. Deobandi is an extreme fundamentalist form of Islam held completely separate from Hindu or any British influence[7]. The meaning of the word Taliban is “student” in Pashto. The Taliban is the group responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks on America and for the 2012 attempted murder of Malala Yousafzai, the young Pakistani woman who spoke out against them[8]. The Taliban in mainly funded by Afghan poppy farming and production of an estimated 90% of the world’s supply of opium and heroin[9]. The group’s main organizer, Mullah Mohammed Omar, went into hiding in 2001. It is now mainly lead by Mullah Dadullah[10].

Hezbollah – A Lebanese political group which originates from a Shia organization[11]. Hezbollah, in part, serves the Iraqi government against ISIL, but is every bit as brutal as ISIL. As The National Interest website article “The Five Deadliest Terrorist Groups on the Planet” states, “If ISIL elicits shivers and fear in the heart of an Iraqi Shia, Kataib Hezbollah produces the same emotion in an Iraqi Sunni”[12]

Boko Haram – Founded in 2002, this group is most infamously known for the kidnapping of 276 Nigerian school girls in April of 2014. Today 219 of these girls are still missing. Boko Haram, led by Abubakr Shekau, is exceedingly brutal and non-discriminating in their attacks. Their motivation is to overthrow the Nigerian government[13].
