The War on Terror 101
an in-depth look
The Beginning - 9/11
The International Military Campaign, also known as the major combatants on "the war on terror," was initially assembled after the terrorist attacks that took place in the United States in 2001.
At 8:45 am, on the morning of September 11th, members of an Islamic extremist group, al-Qaeda, hijacked four airliners to carry out suicide attacks against several specific targets in the United States. Two planes were crashed in the World Trade Center towers in New York City, a second plane was crashed into the Pentagon, and a third plane had crashed onto a field in Pennsylvania.
Over 3,000 people were killed due to the attacks that took place on this day. This event largely triggered an initiative to combat terrorism that the U.S. is still fighting today. Former U.S. president George W. Bush first used the term "war on terror" one week after the attacks took place.
